In the summer of 1965 a small group of people in Witney called a meeting at which there was overwhelming support for establishing a society in Witney dedicated to putting on regular concerts by professional classical musicians. The first Witney Music Society concert was on 19 November 1965 and a pattern was soon established of holding six concerts a year on the second Friday of each winter month from October to March. This has continued uninterruptedly ever since and over the years we have welcomed many young musicians who have later become famous (here are some of them).
Witney Music Society is appreciative of the financial support and encouragement that it receives from West Oxfordshire District Council, Witney Town Council, from the advertisers in our brochure and - for individual concerts - from Making Music and The Countess of Munster Musical Trust. This, together with a flourishing membership, enables us to offer performances of a very high standard. Over the years, the Society has also received grants from the Witney Educational Foundation, which allow us to arrange concerts for schools within the Witney area.
